Hi BR
Thanks for your comments. You must be either going to sleep late or getting up very early. Here in Toronto Canada its only 11:20 pm.
Yes the Scots are an interesting folk, I have met a few of them and I love their dry sense of humour. Too bad my wife who is part Scottish has none... sense of humour that is.

Over a year ago I bought Michel Band 3 Nord und Nordwesteuropa.
2004/2005 for approx $100 Can and that's after a discount.
Anyway when I got home I got one of the biggest disappointments ever.
The catalogue does not list designers, engravers nor Printing Companies which was the main reason I wanted this catalogue in the first place since this aspect of philately is of great interest to me.
Ok I realize the last Europa Michel I have is from 1968 but when did they stop listing this important info.
Lo and behold when I checked in my latest Michel Deutschland 2005/2006 the designers are still there but no more engravers.
Do they really believe people buy their catalogues for those ridiculous prices listed & the pretty picture.
I for one will buy no more Michel -
Thanks Alec for your kind words.
I've checked our your website and find it very interesting even though I haven't paid much attention before to this infla period. I have a few from Wuertemberg canceled during that time but I have no idea whether the cancellation is genuine .
Just curious, how did a Scotsman get interested in German philately?

Thank you Wolle for the nice note. I'm always amazed how many Europeans speak/write/read English. Years ago when my Austrian cousin visited I told him (even though he didn't believe me) that he speaks a lot better English than 50% of the people in Toronto.
Thanks for the stamp offer but I have tried over the years to get kids hooked on stamps, including mine & friends by giving them stamps, albums etc. By the time they're teenagers they lose interest.
Anyway Wolle you are one of the forum posters I enjoy reading.

God no, I'm not offended and I wasn't insinuating that Germans or Austrians are rude or sarcastic any more than anyone else even though my wife who is Anglo Canadian does sometimes claim that we Austrians (my birthplace of long ago) and Germans have certain bad traits. I have to remind her that Anglos are certainly not perfect, far from it.
Anyway if you think American store clerks are bad then you haven't been to Canada, they are even worse.Martin

Hi All
I've been on this forum now for close to a year and enjoy it tremendously. There are so many knowledgeable members here and I have learned a lot even though I'm only a "reader" since my German language skill especially writing is quite poor.
One thing though I've noticed is a lot of bickering & arguing amongst some members and some very sarcastic comments. Also there are some here who are quite rude to beginners which I guess turns there off right away. Is that what you want?I realize there are many who only want to know what their inherited or found collection is worth and have no intention in collecting themselves but who knows, maybe they might eventually . In this day and age when stamp collectors are dwindling mainly due to age (myself included) we should make every effort to encourage new blood.
Sorry for my writing in English but mein Deutsch is sehr schlecht.

Hi Nigel
Thanks for your response. I do realize that specialized catalogs for particular countries would probably provide me with the info I'm looking for but I really don't want to spend a lot of money. I still buy the newest Michel Deutschland every second or third year which thank god still lists designers, engravers & printers, also Austria Netto which does not list them & never did but since all Austrian stamps until recently were printed by the State Printer and die Stecher und Entwerfer are printed on the stamp it doesnt really matter.
I bought the Nord & nordwest europa katalog because I collected (stopped buying them a few years ago) and still am interested in Sweden, Denmark, Norway & Great Britain and one of the things I found fascinating was to see if for instance I could guess who the engraver of a particular Swedish stamp was even though Slania's work would stand out. The engraver "makes" the stamp in this case. With GB stamps its in the design. You have & always had excellent designers: David Gentleman comes to mind, all his work is a pleasure to look at. Most British stamps are truly little works of art.
Actually in the last few years also our Canadian stamps have much improved, some even world class & excellent printing by Lowe - Martin. We have a very good domestic catalogue called Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps which also lists designers, engravers & printers. -
Last year I bought the 2004/2005 Michel Nord & nordwesteurope Katalog but was extremely disappointed when I found out that it no longer lists the designers, engravers nor printers. This was one of the main reasons I bought it in the first place and at $100 I feel I was ripped off. I always found Michel far superior to Scotts but not anymore . I realize that its a question of saving space but then again whats the purpose of the katalog, surely not just for listing ridiculous prices. Collectors buy catalogs for info regarding the stamps not just pricing and if more & more info gets removed I'm sure Michel wont be selling too many more catalogs.
This is just my opinion, others will probably differ.PS. I sent Michel an email, but no reply.

You are right on Nigel, I met lots of WWII Canadian army veterans years ago in the bars (guess you call them pubs) and almost all of them had high regards for the fighting ability & yes even fairness in the German soldiers they faced. They had a lot less for their comrades the so called Zombies who were drafted after conscription was passed but who were never made to serve on the front.

"In this context this is the part that gives me the relaxation he was talking about. These small "paper bits" aren't just that, you can't call them "just paper bits", they are more like "historical artifacts".
The more history they bear, the more interesting and enjoyable they are. Stamps that aren't connected with anything are as good as blank paper sheets. Even if it's something horrible like the Third Reich, it gives you a glimpse of this era and that's the most fascinating thing of collecting stamps (and coins) for me, because it's an easy and inexpensive way to come in touch with REAL history from the comfort of your home.
But that's just my opinion. "That's exactly how I feel. All the nazi era stamps & covers I have were from my grandfather, including the covers I posted from the annexation in 1938. He went and got the stamps & had them postmarked for his collection, as a stamp collector not because he was a nazi. For me they are first of all fascinating because of the historical context but also because they are personal and put me in touch with my grandfather who got me started in collecting stamps well over 50 years ago.

Well I think you have a misconception as to what freedoms Americans & we Canadians have. Just the other day there was an article on the internet where I believe it was in Ohio the authorities removed 2 children from their parents because they named them Adolf Hitler & Himmler. They should have arrested the parents for sheer stupidity but to take their kids away that's too much don't you think?

Hi dietbeck ,
I agree with you 100%, I wonder if that poster feels the same way if he would look at Stalin or Mao era stamps? Political correctness has reached the level of total absurdity here in Canada & the USA as I'm sure it has in Germany.
It's reached the point where special interest groups are even trying to exert influence in what one collects.
